Artificial intelligence research teams and engineers in Taiwan have recently developed an AI robotic system for verifying misinformation on platforms such as communication software and webpages. In this talk, we invite an NGO, an IT engineer, and the curator to share their thoughts on the problem of misinformation rife on the communication platforms commonly used by Taiwanese people and the technology-assisted solutions to the problem.
B.A. Philosophy (National Taiwan University), M.A. Media: Film and Photographic Studies (Leiden University). Hsiang-Yun’s research focuses on philosophy of time in dynamic images, post-colonial historiography, sociology of internet art. Her articles have been published in Taipei Digital Art Center, Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab and Cloud Art Critiques (supported by National Culture and Arts Foundation). Besides research, she also directs performance films that are inspired by her poetry dealing with the vulnerability of human existence and the circularity of time.
Auntie Meiyu was created by programmer Carol HSU. In 2018, HSU found out that hundreds of messages containing misinformation circulated in her family chat groups in the LINE app, such as folklore therapies tips, which could easily be found on Google. She developed a LINE fact-checking chatbot only within one night offering a service to “Search for you right away” and named it “Auntie Meiyu.” In 2020, Auntie Meiyu joined hands with Gogolook, the developer behind the popular caller ID app Whoscall. With their joint goal of providing safety and trust to users, the Auntie Meiyu service is expected to become the best guardian of suspicious messages, expanding its portfolio to offer even more complete protection to the global public.
